6 Tips for Teaching Children a Hygiene Routine

Simply telling your child to go brush their teeth or have a shower doesn’t always work, they may just quickly brush without really cleaning themselves. You need to show them how good personal hygiene practice is an important part of their everyday routine.

The Basics

By starting with small tasks children can easily learn and use these as a building block as you introduce other hygienic practices. These are small responsibilities that help them gain independence and self-esteem. By teaching them small tasks to do on their own both the parent and child can be more confident with them practicing proper hygiene routine in the future.

Provide Fun Resources

Rubber ducky, colorful soap, bubbles, and flavored toothpaste are some of the ways we can make a personal hygiene routine a bit more exciting for children. If you want your child to practice a good hygiene routine make sure they have the resources readily available for when they want to be independent with their routine.

Explain Germs and Bacteria

Try not to exaggerate that they can make you sick, but let them know good hygiene can help prevent them from getting sick from these germs.

Social Standards

Talk to your kids about personal hygiene standards within the community. They might notice at school children are often bullied due to dirty clothes, messy hair, dirty bag or smelly breath and body odour. Talk to your kids about how if they saw someone with bad personally hygiene what would they think. Would they approach that person? How could they help that person? Discuss different grooming activities like wearing clean, pressed clothes, combing their hair, polishing their shoes and keeping their school and lunch bag clean and hygienic.

Monkey See Monkey Do!

Children learn by observation and you are their greatest role model! Show them through example your own personal hygienic routine, how to take care of themselves and the importance of a good hygiene routine. Practice some routine together like washing hands, cleaning up, brushing teeth and so on.
