Imagination paves the way for our future! Creativity and imagination is the driving force behind innovation. It is the reason we’ve gone to the moon, made phones pocket-sized, have cars that can go 301 miles per hour, and so much more!
Children have such a unique view of the world because there is so much they have yet to experience. Their imagination and creatively has no boundaries completely innocent. How can we encourage a child to embrace their imagination?
5 Ways to Encourage Imagination
1. Storytelling & Reading
Read, write and tell stories! Making reading a part of your child’s routine is a great way to enrich your child’s imagination. Books open the doors to other worlds, where the possibilities are endless.
Make a weekly trip to the library or bookstore and have your child choose a new book. Read the book aloud with them at night and talk about the story. Discussing what is happening in the book is a great way to practice reading comprehension.
Tell stories around the campfire. This is a great way to encourage improv and fire up your imagination. Make a game of this and have one say a line at a time to create a story together.
2. Make Art
Doodle, paint, and draw. Give them an art kit full of crayons, markers, craft papers, and more. It’s no secret art & crafts are so much fun for a child, but they also yield so many benefits such as develops motor skills, problem-solving, social skills, confidence building, and ignites the imagination.
A blank piece of paper can be mighty intimidating to anyone because the possibilities are endless. The hardest part of any project is simply starting this exercise will teach your child to adapt and embrace challenges. Encouraging a child to fill a blank piece of paper will help them explore their creativity, personality, and allow their confidence to bloom.
3. Go Exploring
Go hiking, camping, geocaching, explore museums. Seeing, feeling and hearing new things can be so inspirational for anybody.
Exploring the outdoors can spark all sorts of creativity and imagination. Many provincial parks offer short videos, voice guides and tours though trails teaching children the history of the park. The best way to learn new things is by being full emersed in the topic!
Algonquin Park has a wonderful video of their logging museum before you venture out through the trail. Activities like this can be so inspiring, sparking a child’s imagination. They watch the video and walk the same trails these people walked. Thinking about how these people lived, right here and what they did. While walking the trail you can pretend to be those people, or ask your child questions about how they lived, or how your child thinks they did things.

Fresh air and exercise help to clear your head, induce creativity and helps reduce the stress hormone cortisol. Walking yields so many more benefits too! Such as lowering your risk of cancers, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
4. Verbal Activities
Games such as “ISpy”, sing-along songs, rhymes and riddles are a great source of entertainment and spark creativity. These games are designed to make you think on the spot, use your imagination and be creative!
Through play, children learn to make and practise new sounds. They try out new vocabulary, on their own or with friends, and exercise their imagination through storytelling.
5. Allow yourself to be bored!
Turn off the screens and look around find something fun! Generations before you grew up without televisions and phones in our pockets. It is so important our children get that innocent of no technology. When a child does not have a screen in their face, they are left with the whole world in front of them. When we are opposed with challenges it makes us think outside the box and be creative.
