Eat a Rainbow! Healthy Eating for Children

There is a reason why your mom always told you to eat your vegetables! The fruits and vegetables food group provides many of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. Fruits and veggies come in a variety of colors, each colour has its own unique vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and natural plant chemicals that give them their distinct colours.

You can judge the number of nutrients on your plate just by looking at the colours. Making food that is very colourfull not only makes it more appealing for children but also more nutritional.

Red fruits and vegetables like strawberries and red peppers are coloured by a natural pigment called lycopene which is a strong antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer and help to prevent heart disease.

Blue & Purple

Anthocyanin is what gives fruits and veggies their blue or purple colors. Delicious fruits and vegetables like eggplants, blueberries, and blackberries.  Anthocyanin has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage and can help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease.

Rich in vitamin C and carotenoids which give this group their vibrant colors. A well-known carotenoid called beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and carrots. It’s converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy cell development and healthy eyes.

Green

Greens are one of the healthiest foods we can eat. Green veggies contain a range of plant chemicals that are rich in lutein, isothiocyanates, isoflavones, and vitamin K – which is essential for blood and bone health. Leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli are excellent sources of folate a nutrient especially important for pregnant women to consume to help prevent congenital disabilities.

Childhood lessons Taught in the Garden

flower-3450544_1920

The garden, a wonderful place to learn and grow! (Pun Intended)
Growing a vegetable garden with your child can teach them many life lessons. Planning, planting, growing and harvesting shows them the many steps our food takes to get from farm to table.

We often don’t think of the many life lessons our activities teach us. Learning to garden at a young age exposes us to many great life lessons, morals and values rooted in us that take with us into adulthood.

Prepares Us For Adulthood

Adulthood is can be an emotional rollercoaster. Like a garden, everyday something is new, there are so many challenges ahead and garden can teach us those many life lessons we need to live and grow into a successful life.

Getting Intouch With Nature

ladybug-54311_1920The garden is full of exciting creatures! When your child is working on their own garden, they are bound to run into a creepy crawly or two. Introduce them to the many different elements gardening has to bring.
These encounters can be so inspiring to a young child when they are done in the garden encourage them to write and draw about their experience.
Gardens are a great example of the most basic forms of life it shows the fundamentals of the food chain and how the environment works.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Having a garden you can manage with little stress is much more important than having a large garden you cannot manage.

Everything in moderation, creating and planning a garden that is manageable will allow for a plentiful, stress-free life.

Growth Doesn’t Happen All At Once
A plant goes through many stages before it flowers. Each of these stages has a purpose and are important for the plant to grow, some stages take longer than others. Just like a plant, we have to go through stages before we bloom. You cannot just go straight from a seed to a perfect watermelon in a day good things come to those who wait.

In life when you get frustrated about the long road to the finish line (like graduating college) think back to the garden and the many steps it takes to get to somewhere worthwhile.

Accept Help When You Need It

Sometimes we can be stubborn and feel like we can do everything on our own. It is important to know when to put our pride aside and accept help, for the greater good. Don’t wear yourself thin trying to do everything, work as a team and accomplish more.

Persistence Is Key

In a garden, sometimes no matter what you try a flower may refuse to grow. Don’t let failures stop you from trying. Access what you did, study, ask for help and come back with a better game plan.   quote-if-at-first-you-don-t-succeed-try-try-try-again-william-edward-hickson-54-34-92

Be Flexible Life Changes

Life changes, and sometimes it changes fast, for good or bad. Being able to adjust and adapt to new conditions only makes you stronger.

Beauty Comes In All Shapes And Forms

No two flowers are the same, yet each one is pretty in its own way. A garden full of identical flower would be boring, wouldn’t it? There is beauty in being unique.

Clear Out The Negative To Make Room For Positivity

Weeds can grow all over they can take over a whole garden and ruin your precious plants. Just like in life you need to cut out the negativity and not give it any room to grow.

Take Time To Smell The Roses

Life happens fast, always take a moment to enjoy the present. When we’re constantly planning for the future and living in the past, we often miss beautiful moments right in front of us.

Things Grow Then You Take Care of Them
Last, but not least! One of the biggest lessons a garden can teach a child is that through hard work and planning come great rewards.  All things in life last when you put effort, hard work and love into it, relationships, items, yourself everything in life follows this rule.

Reasons to Drink Water & How to Naturally Flavour Water

Our bodies are made up of about 70% water. It is an essential part of living, we can only live a few days without water we can live much longer without food. Thus we should prioritize water consumption. It is the staple of healthy living and comes with so many health benefits.

Why drink water

drinking-water-filter-singapore-1235578_1920

Prevent dehydration: Dehydration can affect you in many different ways; such as mood swings, weight, energy, dizziness, muscle spasms and cause headaches. In more serious cases dehydration can lead to death.

Flushes toxins & Maintains Regularity: Our digestive system needs water to operate properly! Toxins are flushed out through sweating, urine and bowel movements. Drink water to keep your digestive system running smoothly!

Prevent Cancer: Research says staying hydrated can reduce colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and could reduce breast cancer.

Immune system: Staying hydrated ensures that your blood can carry plenty of oxygen to the cells in your body. Thus allowing your body to function properly, your immune system functions best when your muscles and organs are functioning well.

plastic-bottles-115077_1920Save Money & The Environment: Water bottles are a 13 billion dollar industry, which is pretty impressive since water is generally free. Avoid paying for bottled water and contributing to plastic pollution by buying a reusable water bottle. If you currently drink one water bottle a day that’s 365 bottles a year, at a dollar a bottle (in most convince stores) that’s $365 spent on water per year. Not to mention that’s 365 bottles that are endangering the environment, that could easily be replaced by one reusable water bottle.

13 Best reusable water bottles of 2018water-2313378_1280

Boost Productivity: A class of water could help you stay focused. Keep a glass of water near your desk to help curve hunger and stop you from being distracted by snacks.

Clear Skin: Water flushes out toxins that can cause the skin to become irritated and clogged pores. It is suggested that water can help reduce wrinkles and make skin smoother, but there is no research to prove or disprove this. It doesn’t hurt to try!

Kidney Function: Kidneys are responsible for processing 200 quarts of blood per day, sifting out waste and sending urine to the bladder. Water plays a very important role in these processes and can aid in preventing various UTI’s.

people-2557539_1920.jpgWeight loss: Water is very filling, so you feel fuller and eat less. A study found that by drinking water before a meal, you consume less. Water also allows your digestive system to run efficiently, kicking your metabolism into gear, allowing you to get the most benefits from your food.

How much should water should I be drinking?

water-2232732_1920

It is recommended we drink eight 8-ounce glasses (2 litres) of water a day, as well as obtain water from foods such as fruits and vegetables. For some people, eight glasses may seem like too much, but for others, it may not be enough. Water requirements vary from person to person, but a general guideline suggests the total we should have is between 2-3 litres a day from all sources.

To keep it simple, if you’re thirsty drink, if you’re not thirsty don’t drink. If you’re exercising or experiencing a heat wave drink more to keep your fluids up.

Naturally Flavour Water with Fruits and Teas!

Water can be pretty boring, especially if you’re trying to reach the recommended eight glasses a day. Here are some ideas to flavour up your water without adding unnecessary sugars and dyes.

Add Fresh Fruit!  Citrus fruits, limes, lemons and oranges are high in vitamin C and antioxidants that help protect cells from damaging free radicals.

fruit-3441830_1920Berries, pears and apples are full of vitamins, antioxidants and flavour making them great alternatives for sugary drinks.

Add them to a diffuser or squeeze the juice into a pitcher of water for a tasty drink.

You can purchase diffusers for personal water bottles or pitchers.

Adding fruits give that bit of flavour making water more enjoyable and a healthy alternative to sugary store-bought drinks.

Add Natural Fruit Juice – Juices can be very sweet and high in sugar, dilute them with water to give it the juice flavour. Try and go for juices that are all natural, with no added sugar. Tart juices like pomegranate, cranberry, grape and apple are delicious when diluted, takes the bite out of the tart.

Add some bubbles! If you really enjoy carbonated sodas switching to carbonated water would be the healthier choice. Carbonated waters can be on the pricey side at the stores, but you could purchase a Soda Stream for homemade carbonated water. Here are the best soda makers of 2018.

ice-tea-3076517_1920

Herbal Teas -Herbal teas are a great tasting low-calorie alternative to fruit juice. Most fruit teas are just as delicious served cold as they are served warm. Celestial Seasonings teas are free from artificial flavours, colours and preservatives, making them a great brand to look into while exploring water alternatives.

Teas are a delicious healthy alternative to drinking plain water. Although you should always research before serving to a child, some contain caffeine and are not child-friendly. Dr. Lisa Watson has a great guide on Tea for Tots.

Fathers Day is almost here! Which means children will be putting their crafty creativity to work, showing how much they appreciate their Dad with adorable gifts. A lot of presents and craft making creates a lot of unnecessary waste. So how can we make special days like Fathers Day a bit more eco-friendly?

The Traveling Man

Does Dad travel a lot or have a long commute in the morning? These gifts may be just what he needs.

Hockey_Dad

Thoughtful Traveller – You can do this at home or go to a pottery store that has classes. If you choose to craft at home, you can purchase a ceramic travel mug for your child decorate. There are many kinds of paints and markers you can decorate ceramic with, make sure that the paint you choose is non-toxic. Here is a great tutorial on how to paint ceramic. Wikihow.

Travel mugs are very useful, and by using a travel mug, you can cut down on the number of coffee cups going to landfills as well as save money by making coffee or tea from home. It’s a win-win for everyone!

birdhouse

Birdies –  Depending on how much time you have and your child’s age you can build or buy a birdhouse/feeder to paint for the garden. Many craft stores such as Micheals have a variety of birdhouses/feeders you can put together for an adorable gift.

These houses can stay in your garden for years as a beautiful keepsake and also invite little birds to have a place they call their own.

Stones

Stepping Stones- This project will need assistance from an adult as it requires mixing concrete. Pour the concrete into a mould of the shape you want which could be an oval, butterfly, square use your imagination!

Create designs in the concrete with recycled and earth-friendly materials such as dull glass, sea shells, old keys, rocks, and marbles. To personalize it more you can add hand or footprints as well as sign and date the stone while it is still wet.
