Childhood lessons Taught in the Garden

flower-3450544_1920

The garden, a wonderful place to learn and grow! (Pun Intended)
Growing a vegetable garden with your child can teach them many life lessons. Planning, planting, growing and harvesting shows them the many steps our food takes to get from farm to table.

We often don’t think of the many life lessons our activities teach us. Learning to garden at a young age exposes us to many great life lessons, morals and values rooted in us that take with us into adulthood.

Prepares Us For Adulthood

Adulthood is can be an emotional rollercoaster. Like a garden, everyday something is new, there are so many challenges ahead and garden can teach us those many life lessons we need to live and grow into a successful life.

Getting Intouch With Nature

ladybug-54311_1920The garden is full of exciting creatures! When your child is working on their own garden, they are bound to run into a creepy crawly or two. Introduce them to the many different elements gardening has to bring.
These encounters can be so inspiring to a young child when they are done in the garden encourage them to write and draw about their experience.
Gardens are a great example of the most basic forms of life it shows the fundamentals of the food chain and how the environment works.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Having a garden you can manage with little stress is much more important than having a large garden you cannot manage.

Everything in moderation, creating and planning a garden that is manageable will allow for a plentiful, stress-free life.

Growth Doesn’t Happen All At Once
A plant goes through many stages before it flowers. Each of these stages has a purpose and are important for the plant to grow, some stages take longer than others. Just like a plant, we have to go through stages before we bloom. You cannot just go straight from a seed to a perfect watermelon in a day good things come to those who wait.

In life when you get frustrated about the long road to the finish line (like graduating college) think back to the garden and the many steps it takes to get to somewhere worthwhile.

Accept Help When You Need It

Sometimes we can be stubborn and feel like we can do everything on our own. It is important to know when to put our pride aside and accept help, for the greater good. Don’t wear yourself thin trying to do everything, work as a team and accomplish more.

Persistence Is Key

In a garden, sometimes no matter what you try a flower may refuse to grow. Don’t let failures stop you from trying. Access what you did, study, ask for help and come back with a better game plan.   quote-if-at-first-you-don-t-succeed-try-try-try-again-william-edward-hickson-54-34-92

Be Flexible Life Changes

Life changes, and sometimes it changes fast, for good or bad. Being able to adjust and adapt to new conditions only makes you stronger.

Beauty Comes In All Shapes And Forms

No two flowers are the same, yet each one is pretty in its own way. A garden full of identical flower would be boring, wouldn’t it? There is beauty in being unique.

Screen Shot 2018-09-10 at 12.43.34 PM

Clear Out The Negative To Make Room For Positivity

Weeds can grow all over they can take over a whole garden and ruin your precious plants. Just like in life you need to cut out the negativity and not give it any room to grow.

Take Time To Smell The Roses

Life happens fast, always take a moment to enjoy the present. When we’re constantly planning for the future and living in the past, we often miss beautiful moments right in front of us.

Things Grow Then You Take Care of Them
Last, but not least! One of the biggest lessons a garden can teach a child is that through hard work and planning come great rewards.  All things in life last when you put effort, hard work and love into it, relationships, items, yourself everything in life follows this rule.

W5Go! Colours App!

W5GO’s Colour episode has been updated!

Included in the update:

  • MORE COLOURS!
  • Interactive Animations
  • More Words to Learn
  • Augmented Reality Simulation of What uses colour
  • Virtual Reality Simulation of Colours around the Farm
  • Colour Test

Children start to notice colours around the age of 18 months, soon after they start being able to identify textures, shapes, and sizes. Most children are able to name one colour by 36 months, and by the time a child begins kindergarten, they are expected to identify and properly name basic colours (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, black, white, brown, pink).

Colour Identification

It is important to teach children that colour has no shape or size, it is simply what colour an object is. It can be difficult for some children to differentiate colours, shapes, and sizes as they are learning them all around the same time. In this application, there is a series of treasure hunts that will have the child identify many different objects by their colour.

Wheredoyoufindcolour

This episode aims towards teaching your child the basics of colours. The names, what makes colours, primary colours and how to identify colours. The easiest way for a child to learn and understand concepts is by interactive and repetitive learning, which could prove difficult for adults hearing the same songs, colours and numbers every day. We ensure all of our W5GO episodes are free from advertisement, no internet needed and have no in-app purchases. We make sure your child is having a safe learning experience. Therefore you can feel comfortable letting your child play through and explore our episodes on their own, over and over again until they fully understand the concepts.

How Do We See Colour?

What makes colours? Your child will learn the basics of how light makes colour. When light is present colour is visible when the light is absent you do not see colour. When light hits an object, the object absorbs some of the light and reflects the rest and that is what you see. This is an interactive activity where the child will be able to adjust the lighting of the scene to visually see how light affects how we see colours.

Primary & Secondary Colours

Learning the primary colours is a great base for a child to start to understand how colours work. In this episode, we explain what the primary colours are (Red, Yellow and Blue), how they cannot be made and how you can mix them together to create secondary colours.  This is portrayed through a fun animation followed by a paint by an activity where the child will have to colour in images with a selection of Primary or Secondary colours.

Colour_Secondary

Colour Blindness

Within this episode, there is an interactive Ishihara test (Colour Blindness test). By playing through this application with your child, you may be able to help identify any sort of colour identification issues.  It is estimated that 4.5% of the world’s population is colourblind. It is most commonly found among men (1 in 12 males) and is fairly rare in women (1 in 200 females)(Colour Blind Awareness)

Ishihara_plates

Colour blindness is often a genetic condition inherited from their mothers’ side, other conditions such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis can also contribute to a person having colour blindness. People with normal colour vision can see about one million distinct shades of colour, whereas colour blind people see only 5-10% of distinct shades.

It is often difficult to determine if a young child is colourblind or not since they are still learning the colours themselves. There are some signs to look out for such as;

  • Incorrectly identifying the colour of an object
  • Short attention span while practicing colours
  • Issues identifying Green or Red colour spectrums
  • Trouble differentiating coloured texts on a coloured page
  • Eye-Strain while working with colours

Although it is a concern that colour blindness will affect a child later in life, it is not something to worry about. A child is born with this condition and does not know any different than what they see. It may require some attention while in school, but will not be a factor in daily life.

If you suspect your child is colour blind consult a physician for a medical test.

What is W5Go?

W5Go is a project for social edification created by Ecocarrier. W5Go aims to encompass as many of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals as possible with every episode we release. Our goal is to create a large collection of immersive educational applications that are available to everyone.

Throughout the applications, we aim to help children learn English, by teaching 20+ words in every application. The best way to learn a language is through immersion, we introduce English through voice-over, graphics and text.   All of our applications are free to download, free from advertisements, no internet required and do not have any in-app purchases.

We have recently launched a youtube channel full of wonderful educational songs that your child will love!

All of our episodes are created for children aged 4-12. With bright colourful and graphics, we want children to learn English and simples concepts such as proper hygiene, through a fun interactive environment. We want to encourage children to use their imagination, explore and have fun while learning!

We believe that any topic can be taught to a child, by simply breaking it down into the five W’s (Who, What, Where, When and Why).  We want to encourage children to always ask the five W’s. When they question how things work and ask “why not” or “what if” they are constantly learning and embracing creativity. In all of our episodes, we go through the five W’s and let the child guess what the answers could be before explaining.

Why AR/ VR Technology?

Imagination_IconW5Go focuses on creating virtual environments for children to learn, explore and use their imagination in the safety of their own home.  With so many advancements in technology is it important for children to have an even balance of traditional learning and new mobile learning.

Our applications are VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) enabled. Since this technology is becoming such a large part of everyday life, experiencing this technology from a young age is very beneficial, and our applications are meant to complement a child’s traditional education.

Reasons to Drink Water & How to Naturally Flavour Water

Our bodies are made up of about 70% water. It is an essential part of living, we can only live a few days without water we can live much longer without food. Thus we should prioritize water consumption. It is the staple of healthy living and comes with so many health benefits.

Why drink water

drinking-water-filter-singapore-1235578_1920

Prevent dehydration: Dehydration can affect you in many different ways; such as mood swings, weight, energy, dizziness, muscle spasms and cause headaches. In more serious cases dehydration can lead to death.

Flushes toxins & Maintains Regularity: Our digestive system needs water to operate properly! Toxins are flushed out through sweating, urine and bowel movements. Drink water to keep your digestive system running smoothly!

Prevent Cancer: Research says staying hydrated can reduce colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and could reduce breast cancer.

Immune system: Staying hydrated ensures that your blood can carry plenty of oxygen to the cells in your body. Thus allowing your body to function properly, your immune system functions best when your muscles and organs are functioning well.

plastic-bottles-115077_1920Save Money & The Environment: Water bottles are a 13 billion dollar industry, which is pretty impressive since water is generally free. Avoid paying for bottled water and contributing to plastic pollution by buying a reusable water bottle. If you currently drink one water bottle a day that’s 365 bottles a year, at a dollar a bottle (in most convince stores) that’s $365 spent on water per year. Not to mention that’s 365 bottles that are endangering the environment, that could easily be replaced by one reusable water bottle.

13 Best reusable water bottles of 2018water-2313378_1280

Boost Productivity: A class of water could help you stay focused. Keep a glass of water near your desk to help curve hunger and stop you from being distracted by snacks.

Clear Skin: Water flushes out toxins that can cause the skin to become irritated and clogged pores. It is suggested that water can help reduce wrinkles and make skin smoother, but there is no research to prove or disprove this. It doesn’t hurt to try!

Kidney Function: Kidneys are responsible for processing 200 quarts of blood per day, sifting out waste and sending urine to the bladder. Water plays a very important role in these processes and can aid in preventing various UTI’s.

people-2557539_1920.jpgWeight loss: Water is very filling, so you feel fuller and eat less. A study found that by drinking water before a meal, you consume less. Water also allows your digestive system to run efficiently, kicking your metabolism into gear, allowing you to get the most benefits from your food.

How much should water should I be drinking?

water-2232732_1920

It is recommended we drink eight 8-ounce glasses (2 litres) of water a day, as well as obtain water from foods such as fruits and vegetables. For some people, eight glasses may seem like too much, but for others, it may not be enough. Water requirements vary from person to person, but a general guideline suggests the total we should have is between 2-3 litres a day from all sources.

To keep it simple, if you’re thirsty drink, if you’re not thirsty don’t drink. If you’re exercising or experiencing a heat wave drink more to keep your fluids up.

Naturally Flavour Water with Fruits and Teas!

Water can be pretty boring, especially if you’re trying to reach the recommended eight glasses a day. Here are some ideas to flavour up your water without adding unnecessary sugars and dyes.

Add Fresh Fruit!  Citrus fruits, limes, lemons and oranges are high in vitamin C and antioxidants that help protect cells from damaging free radicals.

fruit-3441830_1920Berries, pears and apples are full of vitamins, antioxidants and flavour making them great alternatives for sugary drinks.

Add them to a diffuser or squeeze the juice into a pitcher of water for a tasty drink.

You can purchase diffusers for personal water bottles or pitchers.

Adding fruits give that bit of flavour making water more enjoyable and a healthy alternative to sugary store-bought drinks.

mineral-water-1532300_1920

Add Natural Fruit Juice – Juices can be very sweet and high in sugar, dilute them with water to give it the juice flavour. Try and go for juices that are all natural, with no added sugar. Tart juices like pomegranate, cranberry, grape and apple are delicious when diluted, takes the bite out of the tart.

Add some bubbles! If you really enjoy carbonated sodas switching to carbonated water would be the healthier choice. Carbonated waters can be on the pricey side at the stores, but you could purchase a Soda Stream for homemade carbonated water. Here are the best soda makers of 2018.

ice-tea-3076517_1920

Herbal Teas -Herbal teas are a great tasting low-calorie alternative to fruit juice. Most fruit teas are just as delicious served cold as they are served warm. Celestial Seasonings teas are free from artificial flavours, colours and preservatives, making them a great brand to look into while exploring water alternatives.

Teas are a delicious healthy alternative to drinking plain water. Although you should always research before serving to a child, some contain caffeine and are not child-friendly. Dr. Lisa Watson has a great guide on Tea for Tots.
