Talking to Children about Disabilities

Explaining to your child what a disability is can be quite challenging. It is a sensitive topic, you need to choose your words wisely and create an open dialogue with your child so they feel free to ask you anything. What you say in this conversation directly influences how your child will perceive others with disabilities. Here are seven things to keep in mind when you talk to your child about people with disabilities:

Children with disabilities are like all children, they have feelings they want friends, respect and to be included.
Life can be tough and everyone is trying to find themselves, especially children. They are easily impressionable and often wear their hearts on their sleeves. Words and actions can hurt, all children have the same wants to be included and respected. Teach your children to include all children including children with disabilities in conversation and games, they are no different than typical children and deserve not to be left out due to a disability.

354870-PAPUF2-370Children can be born disabled or become disabled from illnesses or an accident. You cannot catch a disability.
A person does not choose to be disabled something had happened that is out of their control.

Just because someone has a physical disability does not mean they also have a cognitive (thinking) disability.
There many many different types of disabilities each affecting the body in different ways. Some may just be physical meaning they bodies may have problems when moving, others can affect their brain making speaking, school work and thinking difficult for them and some disabilities can be a combination of both. Children with disabilities can do most of the things other children do, it may take more assistance and more time. Be patient and help them!

Children with special needs are different and that’s not a bad thing.
Everybody is unique it is what makes us all so special in our own ways. If everyone was the same life would be pretty boring!

It’s okay to ask questions about disabilities. Knowledge is power!
Learning about different disabilities can help a child understand a personal situation better. Knowing how a disability can affect someone can allow you to help them more and be more empathic about situations.

Choose your words wisely   When talking to your child choose your words wisely. The way to describe children with disabilities will influence the words your child uses to also describe disabilities. Make sure they are accurate and sensitive. Teaching them the correct words like special needs, disabilities, or even the names of specific disabilities like autism and down syndrome.

Be a friend. The best thing you can be is a friend.

W5Go Apps for Social Good!

W5Go Free Educational Apps for Social Edification!

If you have checked the app stores lately looking for a fun, educational and safe app for your toddler you might see a lot of apps “designed for children” are full of in-app purchases, advertisements and are missing educational content. 0325_3

Each episode of W5Go is carefully designed for children 5-8. Our main focus is to get children excited about learning. We want them to run from our app excited to tell their parents, friends, and teachers what they have learned.

Our apps have a unique layout compared to others designed for children. We have episodes teaching children various topics, followed by games to help children retain what they just learned.

We believe in having an equal balance between work and play! In our newer apps, you need to play through the episodes/ lessons before unlocking related games.

We are part of a social edification project by QiiQ this allows us to create apps that are Ad-Free and offer freemium content while being primarily funded by QiiQ and grants. We understand many are unable to afford apps which is why we designed W5Go to be able to unlock all features by playing through the app. If you would like to unlock games faster a $0.99 Star pack is available for purchase, to contribute or donate to W5Go development please contact w5go.official@gmail.com.

W5Go Structure
We refer to each app as a “Season” and each season has several “Episodes” related to the main topic. For example, our season healthy kids have three episodes.

What is Social Edification?

QiiQ for Social Edification™, a new category defined and championed by QiiQ.

W5Go is a project for social edification created by QiiQ. W5Go aims to encompass as many of theUnited Nations Sustainable Development goals as possible with every episode we release. So far our episodes, blog posts, youtube videos, and social media have targeted five of the seventeen sustainable development goals.

Quality Education

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-04We believe everyone deserves the right to a quality education no matter their circumstances. W5Go’s mobile episodes and videos are created for the audience of children aged 3-7. They are easy enough for a child to follow on their own without parental guidance.

We thoroughly research all of our applications to create fun educational content for children to learn and explore. Within every app, we choose a topic and ask the children the W5 to encourage them to think and question what they are seeing. We then ask them to dig deeper by asking questions like “What if?” and “Why not?” W5Go believes you can always push boundaries and learn more. By asking “What if?” and “Why not” it opens doors to your imagination which intern sparks innovation. Each episode teaches 20+ English words through voice-overs, text, and animations for fun interactive learning.

Most of our applications have virtual and augmented reality experiences. Due to the rapid growth of technology, we want to gradually introduce children to modern technology. We use smartphones to portray these experiences, no fancy headsets required, just a smartphone with a gyroscope and a back-camera. Also, for young children to use technology, not using a headset is much safer as there are still aware of the environment around them. W5Go believes children from all walks of life should be able to experience the newest technology.

All of our applications are free to downloads, free from ads, no in-app purchase and do not require wifi after the initial download. W5Go wants to make it as simple as possible to get the educational tools to children to see them succeed.

Gender Equality

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-05A major concern in society today is gender equality. W5Go works to create episodes that are as gender neutral as possible. We want to teach children to respect one another no matter their gender, race or sexuality. At the moment we care carefully crafting an episode and song about bullying, in which we wish to teach children the importance of thinking before you speak or act.

Peace and Justice Strong Institutions

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-16We try to include the peace and justice strong institutions goal in our apps by promoting children to have integrity. So they can understand what is right and wrong, and stand up for injustices when they encounter them. We believe by teaching these morals at a young age, children will grow up with a strong moral compass. Children are our future we must teach them what we know and let them learn from our mistakes. Some of these children will grow into powerful roles within companies and countries, having a strong sense of integrity is very beneficial.

Good Health and Well-Being

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-03Across many of our episodes, we try to educate children on good health and well-being. In our Forest episode, we show how beneficial taking a walk through a forest can be for your mental health. We also focus on our blog to give tips on how to handle stress and  Our episode Dialogues shows a Grandma talking to her grandson about the importance of a healthy hygiene routine.

Zero Poverty

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-01Knowledge is power! W5Go’s objective is to bring children to an even playing field when it comes to education when in or starting kindergarten or preschool. We want to make education available to everyone in any situation.

We believe education is the key to ending poverty. When people are educated they have more opportunities to advance in their lives and career. Everyone should have an equal chance to excel, no matter their environmental upbringing. W5Go wants to give children the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty. This is why all of our applications are free to download, have no in-app purchases, no advertisements and do not require wifi.

How do we do it?

We’re often asked,  “Where do we make money?” or “How do we afford to make these applications”
We are a social edification project headed and funded by QiiQ, a wholesale carrier voice service provision and managed services for retail telecom service providers. W5Go is a project created by and managed by Carl KS Teo, CEO & Founder of QiiQ.

This is all done for social good!

Sounds, Noise, and Hearing App for Children

Sound, Noise, and Hearing

An interactive educational app for preschoolers, teaching them through fun animations, interactives, voice-overs and text what makes a healthy hearing system.

What is Noise?

Noise is any unwanted or disturbing sound, while sounds often surround us,  noises can annoy and even cause adverse health effects. Teaching children to identify the difference between sounds and noises, can help them learn when and how they can protect their ears.

This app teaches children the importance of a healthy hearing system, the basics of how our hearing works, the difference between sound and noises.  What unpleasant noises and pleasant sounds are and how important it is to have a healthy hearing system.

Though interactive animations, virtual reality explanation of sounds, and explainer videos, children can discover the who, what, where, when and whys of hearing.

Fun Learning Activities for Kids

What is W5Go?

Our goal is to create an extensive collection of immersive educational applications that are available to everyone. Throughout the applications, we aim to help children learn English, by teaching 20+ words in every application. The best way to learn a language is through immersion, we introduce English through voice-over, graphics, and text.   All of our applications are free to download, free from advertisements, no internet required and do not have any in-app purchases.

All of our episodes are geared towards children aged 4-12. With bright colors and graphics, we want children to learn English and simples concepts such as proper hygiene, through a fun interactive environment. We want to encourage children to use their imagination, explore and have fun while learning!

We believe that any topic can be taught to a child, by simply breaking it down into the five W’s (Who, What, Where, When and Why).  We want to encourage children to always ask the five W’s. When they question how things work and ask “why not” or “what if” they are continually learning and embracing creativity. In all of our episodes, we go through the five W’s and let the child guess what the answers could be before explaining.

Why AR/ VR Technology?

Dialogues_Icon

W5Go focuses on creating virtual environments for children to learn, explore and use their imagination in the safety of their own home.  With so many advancements in technology is it essential for children to have an even balance of traditional learning and new mobile learning.

Our applications are VR (Virtual Reality), and AR (Augmented Reality) enabled. Since this technology is becoming such a large part of everyday life, experiencing this technology from a young age is very beneficial, and our applications are meant to complement a child’s traditional education. They feature augmented and virtual reality scenes that are fun, interactive and safe for children. They are based on anchored points and do not require a headset. Which means your child will not have to move around to experience it and will have full visibility at all times.

What advantages does W5GO™ offer?

Resourcefulness – it is a properly researched selection of essential information on important topics for the upbringing of a child

Availability – the information and learning materials are readily available to the child on demand with the use of a Smartphone

Evolution – W5Go Project subscribes to the Wiki notion for collaborative development. Teachers and specialists in child education are invited to give us feedback and to contribute to the development of W5Go Project.

Currently, we have 14 applications available across several platforms. All are free to download, free from advertisements, no internet required and have no in-app purchases. Our vision is to create 100 episodes “Chapters” of W5Go so that children everywhere have the chance to learn English and experience AR/VR technology.

Picturebooks play a large role in childhood development. They help a child comprehend what is being said in the story. It is an excellent way to hear, read and relate to new words. They are often repetitive and rhyme which helps children remember keywords and scenes.

Talking to Your Children About Bullying

“Before you act or say it pause and ask yourself… and then what?”

Everyone faces some form of bullying at some point in their lives. Even as adults we often face bullying in the workplace. The advice you give your child about bullying now will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is so important to explain where bullying comes from, how to resolve it and how to prevent it from affecting you.

Bullies act out because of their own insecurities

A child is able to protect themselves from bullies simply by understanding why children are bullies. Most often bullies have been picked on themselves and are looking to feel superior to someone else. They want to make someone else feel weak and small to have a sense of accomplishment over them, they have lost their own sense of value, and are now trying to take it from you.

By helping your child understand what bullies are trying to do, they are able to mentally prepare themselves and not let the bully have any power over them mentally.

Power in Numbers

Stick together with your friends, there is strength in numbers and often bullies will be deterred by larger groups. Bullies target kids who they think are weak and vulnerable, preying on the insecurity that may come with feeling isolated and alone.

Help your child know their worth, so they never feel isolated, insecure and alone. Arrange play dates, get them socializing making friends, get involved with activities. Building positive self-image and confidence can help stop your child from becoming a victim of bullying.

Don’t Tolerate Bullying

Bullying is really immature, anyone trying to harm you mentally or physically is really not worth a second of your time. If someone is trying to bully you and you are unable to resolve the conflict on your own you can always reach out to a teacher or parent to help.

Bullies Have Feelings Too

We all want to feel like we belong somewhere, that we mean something to someone. Everyone has feelings even bullies, and they often bully because they are upset themselves. This does not mean you tolerate bullying. Just the opposite.  Teaching our kids to feel sorry for kids who have lost their own way, their self-esteem, their values to the extent that the only way they can feel good is to try and make someone else feel bad, we teach our own kids how precious each of us truly is, and how desperate we are to be heard, understood, guided, and valued.

Let’s come together to help stop bullying!
