Each episode we try to promote some of the UN SDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals). We intend to incorporate Quality Education and Reduce Inequalities.

  • By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care, and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education
  • By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or another status.

We believe by creating free educational apps for children available on all platforms and around the world, we can reach children in need of education. Children that may not have access to instruments, reading, and other materials can learn and experience it through our applications. Knowledge is power by giving children the tools to learn we can empower them to achieve all their dreams and create a better world.

What is W5Go?

W5Go is a project for social edification created by Ecocarrier. W5Go aims to encompass as many of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals as possible with every episode we release. Our goal is to create a large collection of immersive educational applications that are available to everyone.

Throughout the applications, we aim to help children learn English, by teaching 20+ words in every application. The best way to learn a language is through immersion, we introduce English through voice-over, graphics and text.   All of our applications are free to download, free from advertisements, no internet required and do not have any in-app purchases.

We have recently launched a youtube channel full of wonderful educational songs that your child will love!

All of our episodes are created for children aged 4-12. With bright colourful and graphics, we want children to learn English and simples concepts such as proper hygiene, through a fun interactive environment. We want to encourage children to use their imagination, explore and have fun while learning!

We believe that any topic can be taught to a child, by simply breaking it down into the five W’s (Who, What, Where, When and Why).  We want to encourage children to always ask the five W’s. When they question how things work and ask “why not” or “what if” they are constantly learning and embracing creativity. In all of our episodes, we go through the five W’s and let the child guess what the answers could be before explaining.

Why AR/ VR Technology?

Imagination_IconW5Go focuses on creating virtual environments for children to learn, explore and use their imagination in the safety of their own home.  With so many advancements in technology is it important for children to have an even balance of traditional learning and new mobile learning.

Our applications are VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) enabled. Since this technology is becoming such a large part of everyday life, experiencing this technology from a young age is very beneficial, and our applications are meant to complement a child’s traditional education.

Look! Listen & Learn!

What is the best way to learn? By looking and listening to the world around you! This fun educational song focuses on the importance of keeping an open mind and looking at the big picture! Look around in all seven directions, see the world from different perspectives to really understand the big picture.

Talk to others and engage in discussions, everyone views things differently! That doesn’t mean that your wrong or they’re wrong, every observation is slightly different and we can learn from all views!

The song makes reference to two short stories about how only seeing one point of view makes you miss the big picture and the dangers of being ignorant. An old parable from India The Blind men and the Elephant and an ancient fable from China The Frog of The Well (stories below) feature characters that only have one point of view and refuse to believe or listen to others.

“Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t” – Bill Nye

We believe this is a very important lesson to teach a child because so often as adults we miss the big picture and assume our views are always right. We need to have an open mind, hear others perspectives, learn to be present in order to see the big picture!

youtube6

Look! To the right! To the left! Look to the front! Look to the back!

Look up! Look down! and look inward!  In all 7 directions.

And then listen and you will learn.

About your situation and about yourself!

And you’ll become smart! And you’ll become wise!

In time, you will be able to hear what you see, and see what you hear.

Blind people can’t see but they can look all around them,

And then listen and learn!

It’s very important to see the whole scene,

The big picture!

You can get it very wrong if all you see is a small part.

Like the frog sitting at the bottom of a dry well looking up to the sky.

Like the blind man feeling the limb of an elephant.

Is it a tree

Or stroking the tail of the elephant.

Is it a broom?

Look! Listen! And Learn!

And you’ll become smart! And you’ll become wise!

Thank Goodness

We can Look, Listen and Learn! Even when we may not be able to see.

frogwell

Once a turtle lost its way in the ocean and found himself in a tiny well.

Inside the well, the turtle found a frog and they started talking.

The turtle asked, “Have you ever seen an ocean? Do you know how big it is?”

The frog said, “No. How big is it?”

“It’s very, very big”, the turtle replied.

The frog stretches its arms wide and asks, “This big?”

“No, bigger than this.”

The frog stretches its arms wider and asks, “This big?”

“No no, a lot bigger than this”

“Then it must be from there,” the frog said while pointing to one wall of the well, “to there”, pointing to the opposite wall. “After all, this is how big the world is.”

The turtle said, “No, the ocean is a lot bigger than this.”

“You’re lying. How can anything be bigger than this? This is the whole world after all.”

Neither the turtle nor frog is lying. It’s just that the frog is too narrow-minded to believe that there may be a bigger picture than what he sees and thinks.

The Frog of the Well ~ Zhuāng Zǐ

The Blind Men and the Elephant ~ John Godfrey Saxe

It was six men of Indostan
                                        To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.

The First approached the Elephant,
And happening to fall

Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
“God bless me!—but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!”

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried: “Ho!—what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me ‘t is mighty clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!”

The Third approached the animal,
And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up and spake:

“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
Is very like a snake!”

The Fourth reached out his eager hand,
And felt about the knee.
“What most this wondrous beast is like
Is mighty plain,” quoth he;
“‘T is clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!”

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said: “E’en the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can,
This marvel of an Elephant
Is very like a fan!”

The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
Is very like a rope!”

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!

MORAL.

So, oft in theologic wars
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!

Educational Apps With Sustainable Development Goals

What is UNSDG?

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

They have 17 Sustainable Development Goals to help change the world.
E_2018_SDG_Poster_with_UN_emblem

W5Go is a project for social edification created by Ecocarrier. W5Go aims to encompass as many of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals as possible with every episode we release. So far our episodes, blog posts, youtube videos and social media have targeted five of the seventeen sustainable development goals.

Quality Education

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-04We believe everyone deserves the right to a quality education no matter their circumstances. W5Go’s mobile episodes and videos are created for the audience of children aged 3-7. They are easy enough for a child to follow on their own without parental guidance.

We thoroughly research all of our applications to create fun educational content for children to learn and explore. Within every app, we choose a topic and ask the children the W5 to encourage them to think and question what they are seeing. We then ask them to dig deeper by asking questions like “What if?” and “Why not?” W5Go believes you can always push boundaries and learn more. By asking “What if?” and “Why not” it opens doors to your imagination which intern sparks innovation. Each episode teaches 20+ English words through voice-overs, text and animations for fun interactive learning.

Screen Shot 2018-03-22 at 12.01.02 PM

Most of our applications have virtual and augmented reality experiences. Due to the rapid growth of technology, we want to gradually introduce children to modern technology. We use smartphones to portray these experiences, no fancy headsets required, just a smartphone with a gyroscope and a back-camera. Also, for young children to use technology, not using a headset is much safer as there are still aware of the environment around them. W5Go believes children from all walks of life should be able to experience the newest technology.

All of our applications are free to downloads, free from ads, no in-app purchase and do not require wifi after the initial download. W5Go wants to make it as simple as possible to get the educational tools children need to succeed.

Gender Equality

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-05A major concern in society today is gender equality. W5Go works to create episodes that are as gender neutral as possible. We want to teach children to respect one another no matter their gender, race or sexuality. At the moment we care carefully crafting an episode and song about bullying, in which we wish to teach children the importance of thinking before you speak or act.

Peace and Justice Strong Institutions

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-16We try to include the peace and justice strong institutions goal in our apps by promoting children to have integrity. So they can understand what is right and wrong, and stand up for injustices when they encounter them. We believe by teaching these morals at a young age, children will grow up with a strong moral compass. Children are our future we must teach them what we know and let them learn from our mistakes. Some of these children will grow into powerful roles within companies and countries, having a strong sense of integrity is very beneficial.

Good Health and Well-Being

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-03Across many of our episodes, we try to educate children on good health and well-being. In our Forest episode, we show how beneficial taking a walk through a forest can be for your mental health. We also focus on our blog to give tips on how to handle stress and  Our episode Dialogues shows a Grandma talking to her grandson about the importance of a healthy hygiene routine.

Zero Poverty

E_SDG goals_icons-individual-rgb-01Knowledge is power! W5Go’s objective is to bring children to an even playing field when it comes to education when in or starting kindergarten or preschool. We want to make education available to everyone in any situation.

We believe education is the key to ending poverty. When people are educated they have more opportunities to advance in their lives and career. Everyone should have an equal chance to excel, no matter their environmental upbringing. W5Go wants to give children the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty. This is why all of our applications are free to download, have no in-app purchases, no advertisements and do not require wifi.

Recycling & Water Conservation for Children

All of us want to leave the world a better place for children and generations to come. The easiest way to help that vision come true is to teach children about the importance of recycling and preserving resources.

recycle1Children are great imitators and learn so much from their family and friends. We can incorporate recycling and small gestures into our lives, to help children see the small daily actions reduce our waste. By doing this we pass on important morals and values to children and instill an appreciation for nature within them.

Easy ways to reduce plastic waste in your household

1. Avoid plastic water bottles. Plastic does not fully break down, and it takes about 450 years for one water bottle to break down into smaller pieces in the landfill or ocean. Say you drink one water bottle a day that is 365 water bottles a year that could easily be replaced with one reusable water bottle! Fun activity! Find a reusable water bottle and have your child draw fun designs on the sides.

2. Pack an eco-friendly free lunch. This can be time-consuming but use this as bonding time with your child! Spend a Sunday baking healthy snacks to put in their lunches. Use glass containers and a reusable lunch bag and send them to school with a zero-waste lunch.

3. Say NO to straws and plastic utensils! 500 Million straws are used every day in the United States, most of which end up in the ocean or landfills endangering marine animals. Pack a comfort package in your bag in your car with reusable utensils such as bamboo or stainless steel and paper or glass straws (Paper straws are great for children!). Glass Sipper has many cute glass straws with animals on them. Fun activity! Ask your child how they can reduce their waste while eating and have them help you pack a food comfort package.IMG_6804_clipped_rev_2_1000x

4. Bring reusable shopping bags to the store. It is hard to remember these reusable shopping bags since our generation is not used to it. It is important we remember to bring them to set an example for our children, so they grow up with it being the norm. An easy way to remember bags is by placing them back in your car when you finishing putting away groceries or by placing them near the door on your way out.

5. Cut out juices and sodas that come in plastic packaging. Soda is not good for your health or the environment, reducing your consumption is beneficial in so many ways. You can buy juices in Tetra Paks and cans that you mix yourself at home. Not only do they help the environment they are usually less expensive.

Conserve Water

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to spare. In recent news, many cities have been struggling to provide safe clean water for residents. It takes a lot of energy and resources to bring water into your home and even though most of us are used to water in our houses, we should remember this is a luxury a lot of people do not have.

water

Why should we conserve water?
Although most of the world is covered in water 97 percent of it is salt water, two percent is in the icecaps and one percent left is available for drinking. When we conserve water, we can minimize the effects of drought and water shortages, preserve environments and help ensure we have a sustainable supply of water for future generations.

Teaching children how to conserve water is easiest when you lead by example!

Ways to Conserve Water

  • Wet your tooth bush and only turn on the tap when you need to. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth can save up to 8 gallons of water a day!
  • Time your showers. Create a playlist or set an alarm for the time limit you would like to spend in the shower.  Shortening your shower by a minute or two can save up to 150 gallons a month.
  • When washing dishes don’t let the water run, fill up the sink and use that.
  • Use one glass for drinking water per day or use a reusable water bottle. This will help cut down on dishes.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. After using the water to water plants.
  • Walk through your house and replace any old toilets, taps or shower heads with energy efficient ones.

In this episode on Water, we aim to spread awareness of the importance of clean water, how it affects the environment and who depends on clean and reliable water sources. By teaching children how to conserve, clean and protect the water we are encompassing UNDSG’s 6th Clean water and Sanitation & 14th Life below water goals.E_SDG-goals_Goal-14

“If you think you’re too small to make a difference… Try sleeping with a mosquito in the room”- Dalai Lama

“One person can’t change the world!”

A lot of people have the idea that one person cannot change the world, but they can! Every little bit of conservation helps and when one person starts something others often join and it becomes a movement. If your child is struggling to see the point in these lifestyle changes let them know that although it may be difficult to see their efforts making a difference, every small action counts.

FUN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES

EARTH HOUR

For one hour once a year communities come together to turn off as many lights and electronics as possible.

Earth Hour Activities:
– Have children turn off as much as they can (Identify Energy Usage)
– Go for a hike! With most of the lights off in the city, it is easier to see the stars
– Play board games by candlelight
– Have a party by candlelight

Throw an Eco-Friendly Party

Have a birthday coming up? Plan it with your child to try and make it as eco-friendly as possible.
– Avoid balloons! They are not biodegradable and end up in the ocean. Try decorating with tissue pompoms, or paper banners.
– If possible use your own dishes. No one wants to clean a pile of dishes but just remember you’re preventing plastic from potentially making its way to the ocean. This is a great way to lead by example.

Party

Family Movie Night

Grab the popcorn and have a family movie night. There are many great documentaries about the planet and recycling. BBC’s Blue Planet series is beautifully done and will have you and your children in awe of spectacular footage of animals and landscapes around the world. This is a great way for children to learn about animals and their habitats.

Join a Cause

A lot of cities will have runs, climbs and other events to raise funds and awareness for different causes. These events are usually very family friendly and are a great example to children how a community can come together to achieve something.

Family Friendly Events in Toronto

The Toronto Zoo run is a course through the Toronto Zoo to help raise funds for the animals. During the race, you run past the enclosures and a lot of people dress up as their favourite animal.ZooRun17_-MedalsDisplay-photo

The Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada’s annual Walk of Life supports over 25 cardiac rehab programs and cardiac health-related organizations across Canada. The event offers six different distances at the Ontario Science Centre, giving people of all ages and abilities a chance to participate. Choose from a 1k, 3k, or 5k walk, or a 5k or 10k timed run.
